The “Sunshine State” is one of the most popular winter destinations for its warmer temperatures, less rain, and affordable prices. When you think of Florida you probably imagine clear blue waters, sunny days and white beaches, but that’s not all Florida has to offer. Embark on some serious adventures that’ll create a lifetime of memories for the entire family from wildlife encounters to ziplining above abandoned quarries.
When you feel the cabin fever start to set in, it’s time to plan a family vacation that gets you outdoors, and not to just sit on a beach. Here are some of the most adventurous things you can do on your family trip to Florida.
1. Crystal River
We can’t think of a better way to spend your winter vacation than to visit the “Manatee Capital of the World” with your kids. Manatee season is in full swing from November to March each year when hundreds of the gentle giants make the trek from cooler waters of the Gulf to warmer springs throughout the area.
Crystal River and Homosassa are the only places in North America where swimmers can experience an up-close encounter with manatees in their very own home. Manatees are extremely outgoing, playful and friendly, often swimming near humans to say hello. Manatee are more commonly spotted from November to March, making this one of the best Florida winter destinations. The Plantation on Crystal River offers a one-night package where guests have the chance to enter the underwater world of the West Indian Manatee. The riverfront resort offers the Swim with the Manatees packages starting at $299 for two guests.
2. Everglades Alligator Farm
Nothing screams adrenaline rush quite like gliding across the everglades on an airboat in gator infested waters. Located between Key Largo and Miami Beach, a trip to Everglades Alligator Farm is bound to create unforgettable memories for your family. Book an alligator encounter for $75 to meet baby gators, crocodiles, and even hold a three-foot alligator. On this tour you can feed over 250 alligators.
Touring the everglades is a fun way to explore the outdoors and Florida ecosystem. The farm is open daily from 9:00 am – 5:30 pm and you don’t need a reservation to enjoy an airboat ride.
3. Devil’s Den
Devil’s Den is a privately owned scuba diving center located in Levy County. Reserve time to scuba dive Florida’s premier prehistoric underground spring that’s been home to many extinct animal fossils. Admission to dive is $38 per diver and renting full scuba equipment costs $45. You can rent individual equipment as well. For diving, you must make reservations 7 days in advance.
Snorkeling is available 7 days a week with admission prices ranging from $15-$22 per person, not including equipment. Snorkeling doesn’t require certification so you can easily explore the world class attraction with family. Please note that if you have children under the age of 6, they cannot have access to Devils Den. Children under 18 must have their legal guardian with them or a parental consent form.
4. Dry Tortugas
There’s truly no place on earth quite like Key West, especially during the winter. With near perfect temperatures in the upper 70s with plenty of sunshine, it’s no wonder snowbirds flock to the southernmost point in the U.S. One of the most overlooked attractions just 68 miles off the coast is Dry Tortugas National Park. Visit for a day trip or stay overnight by camping on Garden Key campground. Perhaps the most adventurous part is how you get to the park: by ferry boat or seaplane.
While here, you can watch wildlife, snorkel/dive, paddle, kayak, and soak in the rich history by visiting Fort Jefferson. The stunning and remote tropical island is home to legends of shipwrecks, sunken treasures, ghostly tales of the Civil War and legacies of the pirates of the Caribbean. The coral reefs are the least disturbed of the Florida Keys’ reefs and are famous for their abundant sea life.
5. The Canyons in Ocala
Prepare for an adventure that’ll sweep you off your feet on a zip line that soars 155 feet above an abandoned lime rock quarry. The longest, highest and fastest zip-wires in Florida take you above lakes, cliffs, and massive canyons. This wild ride isn’t all The Canyons has to offer, though. You can kayak on the spring fed lakes, horseback, or simply soak up the breathtaking scenery during a wine tasting tour (sans kids of course).
From the plunging cliffs to the sparkling lakes, a day trip to The Canyons makes for one unforgettable winter experience for the entire family. The award-winning adventure park may just become a new tradition.
6. Disney World & Universal Studios
Speaking of parks, nothing provides more adventure than Disney World and Universal Studios which likely isn’t news to you. Both parks offer unique experiences and incredible journeys. From roller coasters to toddler playgrounds, there’s something for every member of the family no matter how tiny.
The main difference between the two parks is the characters. SpongeBob, the Minions, Scooby-Doo, the Madagascar gang, Spider Man and other marvel heroes can be found at Universal. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is also only located at Universal. Characters from the worlds of Pixar, Star Wars, Disney, and Disney princesses are all inside the Disney parks.
